Frequently asked questions

Who is Dutch?

+

Dutch is the leading online veterinary pet telehealth service, created with board-certified veterinary specialists. They use a science-backed approach to provide dogs and cats with care and prescriptions for their everyday physical and behavioral health issues. We’ve partnered with Dutch to make it easier for pet parents like you to get prescriptions for the medications your pets need quickly — without the stress or expense of a vet visit.

Can I get prescriptions through Dutch?

+

This depends on the laws of the state you live in. Many states allow vets to prescribe medication virtually, while others don’t. To see if you can get prescriptions from Dutch in your state, please select your state from the dropdown above and we’ll let you know.

What is a visit with Dutch like?

+

When booking a video call with a vet at Dutch, you'll be asked a few questions about your pet’s health issue. Depending on the issue, you may also be asked to fill out a longer questionnaire about their symptoms and share photographs of them so the veterinarian can better understand what’s going on. You’ll then pick an appointment time that works best for you.

During your video call, one of the licensed veterinarians at Dutch will talk to you about the symptoms your pet is experiencing, ask you questions, review your pet’s medical history if you’ve provided it, and answer any questions you have. The vet will ask to see your pet and their environment. And they may ask you to perform some simple checks on them if needed.

After your video call, the vet will send you a message with a custom treatment plan to help your pet feel better, including any prescriptions or over-the-counter medications to help your pet. If you already paid for your medication at PetMeds, we’ll send it to you automatically. Otherwise, you’ll need to click the link in your Dutch treatment plan to place your order at PetMeds.

What can I use Dutch for?

+

With Dutch, you’re never alone when it comes to your pet’s health. Whether your pet needs care or you just have a question, their compassionate and knowledgeable vets are always happy to help.

Here are some ways you can use Dutch:

  • Care & prescriptions for over 150 issues

  • Behavioral health, nutrition, and exercise advice

  • Puppy, kitten, and new pet parent advice

  • Preventive care plans

  • Night and weekend vet care

  • Second opinions & follow-up care after in-person visits

  • Advice on whether you need to go to the ER or urgent care

  • Vet care when you’re traveling

  • Easy prescription refills

  • Answers to non-urgent questions

Do I still need a local vet if I use Dutch?

+

The vets at Dutch can treat 90% of issues — but we encourage all pet parents to maintain a relationship with a local vet for things that require hands-on care. This includes:

  • Yearly exams

  • Emergencies

  • Issues that require physical examinations (like a wound that needs stitches or trouble breathing)

  • Blood work and imaging (X-rays or ultrasounds)

  • Vaccines

  • Surgeries

  • Procedures

  • Injectable medications (if your pet needs them)

The health and safety of pets is the top priority at Dutch. If one of their vets believes an in-person visit is best for your pet, they’ll refer you to a local veterinarian and advise you how to care for them until they can be seen. Their vets are happy to provide second opinions and follow-up care after in-person vet visits.
